I had a one week break from work life last week, so I decided to spend it wisely. Initially I headed for Abeokuta (the Rock City) in Ogun State, Nigeria, so I could enjoy the serene environment.
I hadn’t spend 48 hours in Abeokua when Lanre (Pyranet), a friend from Lagos State University (Festac Campus) gave me a call. I had to go back to Lagos. Our bid have been approved to deploy an e-learning cum library application for the school’s intranet. Money or Fun? I had to choose one.
Peace Hotels made me believe I could get the two at a time. Promising free wifi internet access from the comfort of your hotel room looks too good to be true (Did I hear you say Oshofree?). I fell for it, went back to Lagos and booked for three days, while I settle down to customize and extend moodle to fit our proposed solution.
The first night was pleasurable, it was meant to be. I settled down with a bottle of JP Chennet and a good company. However, that night didn’t pass without a hitch! I couldn’t access their wi-fi from my Dell Vostro, not that I don’t hook up with wireless connections easily. I called the engineers four times before any of them could come to my room, which was eventually a futile effort. I couldn’t get connected.
The environment was indeed peaceful, so I quickly forgave the hotel for not getting me connected. I resorted to using the Laptop Section at the café downstairs. All could have gone on fine if not for the terrible customer service I got the sales people at the bar and the café.
It appeared there was no Manager overseeing the staff so their response to customers wasn’t different from what you get from the saucy pepper seller from idumota market.
I am disappointed in Peace Hotel, a place which could have been the best spot for budding entrepreneurs to relax and work at the same time. It’s no doubt a small hotel, but an attempt to use ICT has an edge will be a catalyst for rapid growth if properly managed.
If you have a better hotel in mind, please share.
